Rhetoric

Order Description

Instructions from Univ:

There likely are as many different successful approaches to producing this document as there are good applicants. Nevertheless, compelling personal statements invariably reveal the “intellect” beneath the writing sample as a recognizable person, someone whose combination of professional energy and personality suggests the potential for good colleagueship, for collaboration, and for inspired teaching.

Accounts of your intellectual evolution; personal experiences that helped you develop a sense of profession; activities that suggest your interest in and capacity for teaching; activities that evidence your training for archival research or field work. All are potentially informative. A summary of the high-points on your CV and your general commitment to literary study and university-level teaching are not particularly informative. The statement of purpose can be 1 or 2 pages.

Applicants who hold the B.A. degree are neither expected nor particularly encouraged to designate a research agenda. We want to see how clearly you understand the difference between being an English major and seeking to orient yourself in an academic discipline; the difference between advancing through the certifying process of a professional degree program and growing into a scholar-teacher.

In so many words, I want to express my passion for the writing, reading, literature, and knowledge. I want to draw emphasis to my desire to intellectually evolve in this program, specifically in the field of Rhetoric. Also, perhaps mention that, being a tutor for almost 3 years now has helped me find my calling and my passion. I have learned so much from each student I have tutored and i wish to someday be a grand facilitator for learning at the university level.

Readings:

1. NJC: Chs. 1-2

Analysis:

1. What is the historical argument that Alexander is making? What kind of evidence and support does she provide?

2. For your projects this quarter, you will need to choose a topic related to mass incarceration, but one that is much more focused since mass incarceration is too big of a topic and impossible to address adequately in ten weeks. What you will need to do is identify one of the many current problems that is contributing to the larger problem of mass incarceration. As you read chapters 1-2, make a list of specific problems that Alexander mentions, along with page references so that you can locate them. Try to come up with as many as possible and begin identifying which ones seem most interesting to you.
